He was assigned to the Directorate General of Submarine Warfare at the Ministry of War in 1917. He toured the world as commander of the cruiser of 10 000 tonnes Tourville, before becoming in 1936 Vice Admiral of the Mediterranean Wing. He was then appointed 1939 maritime prefect in Toulon. It takes into place 1939 northern theatre of operations command after being appointed Admiral at the Declaration of War “North”. His name is still attached to the defence of Dunkirk, where the action of the troops he commanded allowed large British and French contingents to leave for England, more than 300 000 soldiers.

Admiral Abrial, refusing to abandon his men, is taken prisoner on 4 June 1940. However, he was released thanks to Admiral Darlan. Après le traumatisme de Mers el-Kébir, he is appointed by Marshal Pétain Governor General of Algeria (succeeding Georges Lebeau in place since 1935, who is fired), position he holds from 20 July 1940 at 16 July 1941. General Weygand succeeds him. Abrial replaces Admiral Auphan as Secretary of State for the Navy. Marshal Pétain then appointed him Minister of the Navy, from 29 November 1942 at 25 March 1943, the day before he left the government.

He was arrested at the Liberation and sentenced 14 August 1946, by the High Court of Justice to ten years of forced labour, national degradation for life for his collaboration with the Vichy regime. His sentence is commuted to five years in prison.

On 2 December 1947, he’s on parole. He is then rehabilitated and entitled to his death to voluntarily limited military honours.
