Extremely rare miniature fold-out of Swiss women’s costumes, circa 1820. A precious and delicate testimony of identity, distributed at the time of the creation of the Confederation of the XXII cantons.

 

Petits Souvenirs de la Suisse. No place, no date [ca. 1820]. Series of 22 miniature watercolour vignettes (2 x 1,6 cm), unnumbered, mounted on brown laporello paper (16 x 26 mm, 370 mm unfolded), in an ornate contemporary red morocco folder and green morocco slipcase with gilt title, decorated with gilt scrolls on the back.

22 delicate miniature portraits of women in colour, representing the different costumes of the fledgling Confederation of the XXII cantons.
