[Claude Marie Giraud (Lons-le-Saunier,1711 – Paris, 1780), doctor]. La peronie aux enfers chez Minos. Arrest de Pluton contre la faculté de Medecine. No place no date [around 1750]. Manuscript. 15 pp. in-4°. Sewn.
A rare contemporary copy of this tribute to La Peyronie, an octosyllabic flat-rhymed poem attributed to Claude-Marie Giraud, published by Minos in 1748 under the title Jugement de Pluton, contre la Faculté de médecine, ou La Peyronnie aux enfers ou Arrest de Pluton contre la faculté de médecine. A fine satire in praise of the Faculty of Medicine and its president, castigating ‘barbers, groomers, fraters and wigmakers’, pseudo-medicines and other charlatans, Pluto’s great purveyors. Our manuscript contains many variations on the corrected (updated) and expanded edition of 1759, published in Avignon, in fact in Paris. In addition, the passage against the English does not appear.
François de La Peyronie (1678-1747) was first surgeon to Louis XV, a founding member and president of the Académie de chirurgie, and a colleague and friend of Giraud.
The two editions, of 1748 and 1759, are particularly rare, as is our copy.
Handwritten bookplate in pencil on verso of last page : « 19 mars [?] 1750. Giron [sic] demeurant à Paris, rue St Honoré [?] vis-à-vis la fontaine du Trahoir [?] »
