Voluminous and precious preparatory and publication file on Arno Breker. 60 ans de sculpture written in collaboration with Volker G. Probst, published by Jacques Damase, Paris, 1981, in-4°, 215 pp. Paperback copy enclosed.
The correspondence describes all the difficulties the artist still faced in disseminating his work, in the face of violent rejection and controversy, 40 years after the end of Nazism, in a difficult context (the attacks on rue Copernic in Paris), despite the support of intellectuals and personalities from the art world. We look at the stages in the production of this monograph, from editorial negotiations and the delicate choice of preface to the iconographic preferences among the artist’s hundred photographs, as well as the reception and distribution of the work. Last but not least, there is a collection of documents relating to the marketing and sale of his works in the 1980s.
Jacques Damase (1930-2014), a brilliant publisher and gallery owner, published monographs on Chagall, Braque, Picasso and above all Sonia Delaunay. He ran an art gallery in Paris (Galerie de Varenne), as well as in Brussels, where he showed rare works (watercolours by Le Corbusier, engravings by Jim Dine, Jean Cocteau and Hans Arp, artists’ jewellery). As a publisher, Jacques Damase publishes fine original and personal books (Paul Éluard, Marcel Aymé, Joë Bousquet) that he designs himself from start to finish (layout, typography, graphics) in the fields of art, literature and typography. Jacques Damase is one of the few publishers to have had exhibitions of his books in major international libraries and museums (Centre Pompidou, with an introduction by Louis Aragon, Berlin, Madrid, Stockholm, Athens, The Hague, Moscow, St Petersburg, Bucharest, the Gutenberg Museums in Mainz, etc.). According to Le Journal des arts (no. 288, 3 October 2008), “Jacques Damase has left his mark on art publishing“.
