A member of the Communist Party from 30 September 1943, Jean-Pierre Dupuy served as a permanent representative of the P2 Resistance (United Youth Forces, provincial deputy in Marseille and then regional deputy until May 1944), before joining the Jura Maquis on 15 June 1944 under the pseudonym Jean-Pierre Japy, as a second lieutenant in the FFI (Jura Maquis, deputy to the Head of the 5th District, Lieutenant Poly, alias ‘Pigeon’); he served as a second lieutenant in the Lyon Regional Military Police, was subsequently demoted to cadet officer, and was finally demobilised as a corporal in the Infantry on 25 August 1945. Upon returning to civilian life, he became Chief Executive Officer of Dupuy-Compton Publicité in Neuilly-sur-Seine.

[‘The spring of 1940 was the most beautiful summer France would ever know. In my dormitory at the Lycée de Lons-le-Saunier [where he was a pupil studying elementary mathematics], the shutters and windows had been left open at night for several days already. And, very early on, a marvellous sun bathed the sleepers in its warmth. I take the opportunity to read, in solitude and amidst the gentle murmur of the countryside. On 10 May, around 5 o’clock, the sun is even more dazzling, but I sense something unusual in the air, something almost imperceptible; I can even hear one or two aeroplanes… At 6 o’clock, during study hall: ‘The Germans have attacked’! I shall never forget that early morning of 10 May, nor that terrible spring.’ (Neuilly, 10 May 1980).]
